Exhaust Mode – High-Velocity Ceiling Air Removal & Contaminant Control

The SunCooler™ has four autonomous operating modes. One of its most powerful is Exhaust Mode. In this mode the SunCooler rapidly pulls hot stratified air, welding fumes, VOCs, dust, vehicle exhaust, and other airborne contaminants out through the ceiling while creating powerful negative pressure that draws fresher air into the occupied space.

Whether assisting existing HVAC systems or operating as a stand-alone solution in older facilities never designed for air conditioning, Exhaust Mode delivers high-velocity turbulent airflow that removes heat and contaminants at the source. The SunCooler is specifically designed to replace all grid-powered rooftop exhaust fans, passive whirlybirds, and hoods.

  • Replaces legacy exhaust fans with an easy drop-in solar-powered unit using curb adapters to reuse existing roof penetrations
  • Provides powerful psychrometric cooling through high-velocity airflow for superior heat mitigation
  • Removes airborne contaminants including fumes, VOCs, dust, and vehicle exhaust
  • Works completely off-grid: Continues operating even during grid outages or brownouts

How Exhaust Mode Works – Replacing Legacy Fans with Powerful High-Velocity Ventilation

In Exhaust Mode, the SunCooler™ rapidly pulls hot stratified air, welding fumes, VOCs, dust, vehicle exhaust, and other airborne contaminants out through the ceiling. At the same time, it creates strong negative pressure that draws fresher air into the occupied space from doors, louvers, and wall vents.

Whether assisting an existing HVAC cooling system or operating as a stand-alone solution in older facilities never designed for air conditioning, Exhaust Mode delivers massive high-velocity turbulent airflow (up to 15,000 CFM) that breaks up stagnant zones and provides proven psychrometric cooling for occupants.

The SunCooler is purpose-built to fully replace all grid-powered rooftop exhaust fans, passive whirlybirds, and hoods. Using our curb adapters, it reuses existing roof penetrations meaning minimal (or zero) new holes in the roof on high-bay warehouses and big-box retail stores with skylights.

Key Advantages of SunCooler Exhaust Mode

  • Replaces legacy exhaust fans: No more grid-powered rooftop units or passive whirlybirds
  • Easy drop-in installation with curb adapters that reuse existing roof penetrations
  • High-velocity turbulent airflow that removes contaminants and provides real psychrometric cooling

The Dramatic Benefits of Exhaust Mode

Exhaust Mode is where the SunCooler™ truly shines as a high-performance industrial ventilator. It rapidly removes hot ceiling air and airborne contaminants while delivering powerful high-velocity turbulent airflow that provides real psychrometric cooling for occupants.

  • Assists or fully replaces existing HVAC cooling by pulling hot stratified air out of the ceiling and creating strong negative pressure for fresh air inflow.
  • Delivers proven psychrometric cooling and heat mitigation through high-velocity turbulent airflow that is extremely effective in older facilities never designed for HVAC (see our Correctional Facilities page).
  • Actively removes airborne contaminants including welding fumes, VOCs, dust, vehicle exhaust, and process emissions.
  • Replaces all grid-powered rooftop exhaust fans, passive hoods, and whirlybirds with a single easy drop-in solar unit.
  • Uses curb adapters to reuse existing roof penetrations: Minimal or zero new roof holes needed on high-bay warehouses and big-box stores with skylights.
  • Saves significant electricity by eliminating grid-powered exhaust fan operation and frees up valuable service panel capacity.
  • Works regardless of grid availability: Continues operating during outages or brownouts.
  • Same unit also delivers Nightflush, Induction, and Destratification (with up to 30% heating fuel savings).

Frequently Asked Questions – Exhaust Mode

1. What is the difference between Exhaust Mode and traditional rooftop exhaust fans?

When the grid fails during a heat wave peak energy situation, the traditional exhaust fans shut down which poses some serious ventilation and heat related risks. The SunCooler is off-grid and operates independant of the grid and in fact has the most power during these heat waves because it is solar powered!

2. Will Exhaust Mode replace all my existing grid-powered exhaust fans?

Yes. The SunCooler is specifically designed to replace legacy rooftop exhaust fans, passive whirlybirds, and hoods. Using our curb adapters, it reuses existing roof penetrations, making the upgrade fast and low-disruption with minimal (or zero) new roof cuts required.

3. How does Exhaust Mode provide heat mitigation and psychrometric cooling?

By rapidly removing hot ceiling air and delivering high-velocity turbulent airflow directly over occupants, Exhaust Mode accelerates convective and evaporative cooling on the skin. This proven psychrometric effect significantly increases heat tolerance even in facilities without air conditioning. See our Heat Mitigation Strategy page for more details.

4. Can the SunCooler reuse my existing roof penetrations?

Absolutely. Our curb adapters allow the SunCooler to drop directly into most existing exhaust fan or skylight openings. This is especially valuable for high-bay warehouses and big-box retail stores often requiring very few (or zero) new roof penetrations.

5. Does Exhaust Mode work alongside my existing HVAC system?

Yes. It complements and assists existing HVAC by removing hot stratified air from the ceiling, reducing the cooling load, and improving overall system efficiency. Many facilities see reduced HVAC runtime and extended equipment life.

6. How effective is Exhaust Mode at removing contaminants?

Extremely effective. It actively pulls welding fumes, VOCs, dust, vehicle exhaust, and other airborne contaminants out of the building while breaking up stagnant dead zones with powerful turbulent airflow far more effectively than passive vents or low-speed fans.

7. Will the SunCooler continue operating during power outages?

Yes. Because it is fully off-grid with its own solar array and battery backup, Exhaust Mode continues delivering powerful ventilation even when the grid is down or during brownouts.

8. Can the SunCooler replace dedicated smoke exhaust fans?

Not yet. The SunCooler is not currently certified as a smoke exhaust fan. However, smoke-exhaust certification is actively in our product development pipeline and we expect to offer a certified smoke-control version in the near future. In the meantime, the SunCooler excels at general process exhaust, fume removal, and daily ventilation.

9. How does Exhaust Mode compare to passive whirlybirds or hoods?

Passive whirlybirds and hoods provide very little airflow unless there is strong wind. The SunCooler delivers consistent, high-volume, high-velocity airflow 24/7, powered by solar and battery, making it dramatically more effective at removing heat and contaminants.

10. Can Exhaust Mode be combined with the other SunCooler modes?

Yes. The SunCooler is a true 4-mode system. You can schedule or sensor-trigger any combination; for example, running Exhaust during the day for contaminant removal and heat mitigation, then switching to Nightflush at night for pre-cooling, and Destratification in winter for heating savings.
